Revision as of 04:30, 10 November 2025
Needs to be updated to reflect situation as of 2024-04-01 when the "official NixOS wiki" declared itself launched. I already updated the Main_Page. --Domtoro (talk) 10:22, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
Since the 2024-04-01 official wiki revival, I have noticed that the divergences between "NixOS_Wiki:History" pages on both wikis are particularly interesting: While individual wiki pages may diverge because people innocuously update one wiki and not the other, the history pages seem to be diverging based on either divergent perceptions or information. Why hasn't nixos.wiki been merged and redirected to wiki.nixos.org?
From what I can tell, the "Official NixOS Wiki" (wiki.nixos.org) is fully launched and considered ready for use.
Having similar looking, but slightly out of sync content on both wikis is confusing from an end-user perspective. Speaking personally, my getting into NixOS was significantly hindered by scattered and outdated documentation, to the point that I almost gave up completely multiple times before finally getting a working system.
Is migrating from the unofficial wiki (nixos.wiki) to the official NixOS wiki (wiki.nixos.org) a technical limitation in transferring content? A social issue of disagreement from the operators of both wikis, each wishing to maintain control of the wiki? Something else entirely?
From my perspective, the ideal solution would be to:
- Add whoever runs the unofficial wiki to the team managing the official wiki (if they aren't already on it)
- Lock the unofficial wiki to prevent new content from being added while transitioning to the Official Wiki
- Sync the content such that the Official wiki is the most up-to-date version
- Retire the unofficial wiki and setup permanent redirects from nixos.wiki → wiki.nixos.org to aid with SEO and keep old links in blog posts and such functioning
What's stopping this?

Thank you for your question and for detailing your user experience. I understand that having multiple wikis can be a source of confusion.
As a member of the nixos.wiki admin team, I would like to clarify our position.
To answer your questions directly: This is not a technical limitation. It is, as you surmised, a fundamental disagreement about governance and independence.
nixos.wiki was founded as an independent, community-driven resource in response to past administrative decisions on the former (old) official wiki. Because of that experience, we are fundamentally committed to operating nixos.wiki independently, separate from any official Nix/NixOS project or Foundation governance, now or in the future.
I am fully committed to this principle, as is the rest of the admin team. Therefore, we have no plans to merge with wiki.nixos.org or retire this site.
Regarding the "scattered" content and divergence you mentioned: wiki.nixos.org was, as we understand it, seeded with a copy of nixos.wiki content. This is perfectly fine, as the content is openly licensed, but the two wikis have naturally diverged since. Because we recognize that many good resources exist (including the official wiki), our team initially allowed and encouraged cross-linking to aid user navigation. However, due to repeated and prolonged malicious activity, we have been forced to block most cross-wiki interactions. This activity continues on a regular basis to this day, often from individuals claiming to represent the official wiki (an affiliation our team strongly doubts is accurate). This means that for now we do not plan to change this.
We will continue to operate as an open, unofficial wiki and welcome content contributions from all.

Thank you for the response, Domtoro.
For those out of the loop, are there any links or a tl;dr that could be provided on what those past administrative decisions were (and if relevant, how the issue persists with the new official wiki)?
